Electrodessication

Electrodessication Rancho Mirage

Electrodessication And Curettage Palm Desert

Electrodessication is a novel technique in the treatment of NF-1. Curettage uses a sharp tool called a curette that removes acne, boils, pimples, molluscum, and other similar types of skin-related problems. The two techniques are often used together (curettage followed by electrodessication).

What Is Electrodessication Used to Treat?

Electrodessication is used with or without curettage for the removal of many different types of unwanted growths on the skin, such as skin tags, warts, molluscum, and seborrheic keratoses.

Electrodessication can also remove neurofibromas, small tumors on the skin that form in large clusters. You can remove all of them in one treatment instead of taking each neurofibroma independently with a scalpel one after the other in different sittings, which can be quite painful.

Electrodessication can be used to treat broken blood vessels and areas with sebaceous hyperplasia and can also remove certain types of moles.

What Are the Advantages of Electrodessication?

Electrodessication has five great benefits:

What Is the Electrodessication Procedure?

Our Rancho Mirage electrodessication treatment is an outpatient procedure in which you are given an anesthetic cream (typically containing 1% lidocaine) that is applied on the area of your skin that is to be treated. The anesthetic cream numbs the area so you don’t feel pain during your procedure.

Your surgeon will use a curette, a small round instrument between 1 mm and 6 mm, to slowly scrape off the top of the skin growth towards the deeper layers.

Your surgeon will use an electrosurgical device called a hyfrecator over the treated area where a strong electric current is passed into the tissue to dry it out, desiccate and kill it. Some of the top layers of the skin is removed as the curette gets as much of the skin growth out as possible. The goal is prevention and not let it reoccur. Any denatured dermis will be removed completely until only living tissue is left behind in the area.

This can be done up to two or three times depending on whether the surgeon was able to get the entire skin growth.

After the procedure, a small scab usually forms over the treated area. It falls off in one to three weeks. Using a topical prescription cream can resolve the scab even faster.
